FT Africa Journalism Fellowship with One World Media

In line with this, Financial Time(FT) is searching for a mid-career journalist from, located in, or covering Sub-Saharan Africa, who has an ambitious written story to tell a global audience.

They are seeking a talented and brilliant writer with some experience who can break down a difficult story into simple and understandable language that is fascinating and has broad appeal and relatability. The chosen Fellow will create a piece of long-form journalism based on an economic or business story from the region that connects with the FT’s worldwide audience.

A Brief History About One World Media

One World Media is a non-profit organization created over 30 years ago by a group of journalists who saw that at the time, foreign reporting was limited and frequently reinforced stereotypes. They wanted to encourage and recognize more and better reporting from the global south.

Since then, they have been working to help journalists and filmmakers throughout the world, share stories that educate and connect us all.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for this opportunity offered by FT Africa Journalism Fellowship with One World Media, you need to meet some criteria and they are as follows:

  • FT is looking for a mid-career journalist from and based in Sub-Saharan Africa, working in print, digital, or multimedia reporting.
  • They will select one FT Fellow to join the current OWM Fellowship cohort.
  • There is a possibility of an extended engagement for a successful Fellow.
  • They are interested in brilliant and talented writers with some experience that can break down a difficult story into simple language, convincingly, in a way that has wide appeal and relatability.
  • FT particularly seeks journalists who have a keen interest in business and global affairs, an international mindset, and sharp reporting instincts.
  • Applicants who are interested in this opportunity must demonstrate strong writing skills and an ability to write engagingly and extensively about economics, corporate, and market issues.

Selection Criteria

  • The chosen Fellow will create a piece of long-form journalism based on an economic or business story from the region that connects with the FT’s worldwide audience. They are particularly interested in stories from countries that the FT does not cover regularly. The story could be one that has a political impact or shines a light on an industry sector or company.
  • The story’s primary form will be text, but there will be opportunities for special digital treatment of data and of visual elements.
  • The FT Fellow will receive one-on-one training and mentoring from David Pilling, the FT’s Africa editor, and Alec Russell, the FT’s international editor.
