The program encourages applied and open research, which means that the research encompasses a practical question and must be published openly without charge to the scientific community.

The Foundation sanctions research utilizing human or animal subjects when an authoritative entity has declared that the project is ethical and adheres to local law. The Principal Investigator holds the responsibility of obtaining these credentials.

Areas of Focus

Statements of interest and subsequent proposals should center around topics that are pertinent to any of the thematic areas listed below:

  • Greening the Internet
  • The lnternet Economny
  • A Trustworthy Internet
  • Decolonizing the Internet

Eligibility Criteria

  • Independent researchers are required to hold a postgraduate research degree (such as a PhD or Masters) and demonstrate their expertise through peer-reviewed publications, patents, academic works, or independently published works in the relevant field.
  • Public research institutions must be classified as 501(c)(3) or have an equivalent status, and their mission should align with that of the Foundation. Please note that private institutions are not eligible to receive funding.

Selection Criteria

Researchers are encouraged to submit comprehensive applications for review by independent External Reviewers. The final selection of submissions will be based on the following criteria:

  • Alignment of the research with the Foundation’s thematic areas.
  • Originality of the research.
  • Applicability of the research and its potential to inform decision-making.
  • Collaboration in the research process.
  • Intersectionality in the approach taken by the research.

How To Apply

  • From April 2 to May 14, 2024, applications will be open for submission. The deadline for application is at 21:00 UTC on May 14, 2024.
  • This year, there are separate registration forms for organizations/universities and individual applicants.
