The PATA Fellowship program is supported by the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) and the Association of Anesthesiologists of Uganda (AAU), offering a rare chance to become fully immersed in the practice of paediatric anaesthesia.

Fellowship Overview

The PATA Fellowship 2024/25 promises a 12-month engagement in pediatric anaesthesia practice, which is anchored at the prestigious Department of Anaesthesia, Makerere University College of Health Sciences, and the Mulago National Referral Hospital. Under the guidance of seasoned local faculty and visiting experts, fellows will engage the intricacies of pediatric anaesthesia, honing their skills and knowledge to deliver safe and effective care.

PATA-Uganda is a monument to collaborative excellence, supported by a coalition of partners that includes Smile Train, Vanderbilt University Medical Centre, and the global surgery and anaesthesia community. This fellowship encourages collaborations across borders to guarantee long-term capacity-building in paediatric anaesthesia throughout Africa.

Eligibility Requirements For Paediatric Anaesthesia Training in Africa (PATA) Fellowship 

To be considered for the PATA Fellowship 2024/25, applicants must meet the criteria below:

  • Registered Anaesthesiologist: Applicants must hold registration as an anaesthesiologist in Uganda or their country of origin.
  • Endorsement: Endorsement from the national anaesthesiology society and the applicant’s head of department or hospital management is mandatory.
  • Commitment to Service: Successful candidates are expected to return to a recognized post in-country, as a commitment to local healthcare delivery.
  • Pediatric Focus: Preference is given to candidates working in hospitals primarily serving pediatric surgical patients.

Required Application Documents

The following documents are required in applying for the Paediatric Anaesthesia Training in Africa (PATA) Fellowship:

  • Letters of Recommendation: An Endorsement from the National Anaesthesiology Society and the applicant’s department head or hospital management.

  • Registration and Licensing: Certificates affirm registration with the medical board or council, alongside a current practising license.

Selection Process

Eligible candidates undergo interviews to assess their suitability for the fellowship.
