The International Center for Journalists is thrilled to announce the opening of applications for the 2024 ICFJ Knight Fellowships, commemorating the fellowship’s 30th anniversary of fostering innovative journalism practices worldwide.
These fellowships are made possible through the generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
The year-long fellowship program aims to cultivate pioneering media initiatives that tackle challenges in the fellows’ home regions and share those innovations globally.
In 2024, the ICFJ Knight Fellows will include one or two individuals based in the U.S. who will concentrate on the intersection of international and domestic information needs.
Thematic Areas
Themes that applicants are encouraged to explore include, but are not limited to, the following. Surprise them with your innovative proposals!
- Harnessing AI for journalism
- Establishing communities and support systems for journalists in exile
- Meeting the information requirements of diaspora communities in the U.S.
- Combating misinformation, particularly during electoral processes
- Reporting on climate change in inventive ways
- Establishing networks of shared services or infrastructure to bolster independent journalism
Benefits
- The successful candidate will receive financial support, mentorship, and access to a network of media professionals. The fellowship also offers opportunities for training and international exposure, ensuring that the fellow can make a significant impact in their local media landscape and sustain the project beyond the fellowship period.
Eligibility
Open to journalists with a minimum of three years of professional experience. Applicants should demonstrate a track record of impactful journalistic endeavors.
Application requirements
Applicants must submit a comprehensive project proposal outlining the objectives, innovative aspects of their approach, and expected outcomes of their project. A draft budget for the project is also mandatory.
Applicants should demonstrate how their previous work aligns with their proposed fellowship project and provide a plan for sustaining the project after the fellowship concludes.
