About the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

When the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) was established, it merged several existing foreign aid organizations and programs. There had never been a single agency charged with foreign economic development before, so the passage of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (pdf) by Congress marked a significant shift in U.S. foreign assistance activities.

President John F. Kennedy was at the helm of this transformation. He recognized the need to consolidate development into a single agency in charge of administering foreign aid to promote social and economic development.

On November 3, 1961, USAID was established, as was a spirit of progress and innovation. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) celebrated its 50th anniversary of providing foreign development assistance to the American people on November 3, 2011.

The workforce and culture of USAID continue to reflect core American values rooted in a belief in doing those things that are right.
