Founder of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke hopes there will be more games like Baldur’s Gate 3. The founder of the gaming studio thinks that the game is really great and wishes there were other games like it.
More Games Like Baldur’s Gate 3
Isometric fantasy RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 has really enjoyed heaps of critical success ever since its launch back in August and, in a discussion with GamesRadar+, sister site to Techradar, Swen Vincke, founder of Larian Studios revealed that he has high hopes for a resurgence in computer role-playing games (CRPGs) such as Baldur’s Gate 3.
In the wake of Baldur’s Gate 3 winning Ultimate Game of the Year at the just concluded Golden Joystick Awards 2023 event, Vincke reportedly revealed his thoughts on the successes of the game as well as the future of the CRPG genre.
“We’ve always been very focused on just making our game, and a lot of people have attached a lot of things to that because the game turned out the way that we wanted it to be […] So I hope there will be more games like a CRPG type of game. It’s a game I like to play, and a lot of people in the industry like to play as well. So, if those games come out, and they don’t have a story that we know already, I think that will be great. I look forward to those types of games.”
What Does CRPG Mean?
And for those who are confused by the acronym soup, a CRPG simply refers to a specific sub-genre of role-playing game, one which is usually created in an isometric top-down view and then designed to invoke the open-ended and story-driven feeling of a tabletop role-playing game such as Dungeons & Dragons.
The words of Vincke mirror our very own hopes for the genre, too. The playful storytelling as well as the wide scope for player creativity that is offered by these games offer a very powerful appeal which, having been popularized by the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, could quite spell a significant turn towards CRPG development in the nearest future.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Release Date
Though the year is drawing to a finale, fans of CRPGs all over and in the industry will be pleased to note that genre veteran Owlcat Games intends to release its next CPRG, known as Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader on December 7. Those fans and players who enjoyed Baldur’s Gate 3 might also get a kick out of the previous title of Owlcat, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, which, though lacking the cinematic flair of Baldur’s Gate 3, offers gamers a similarly deep as well as a rewarding narrative with huge scope for player choice.
