ELSA/KAS National Essay Writing Competition For young Ethiopian students 2024 (Up to 75,000 ETB Award)

The Ethiopian Law Schools Association (ELSA) and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Office Ethiopia/African Union are excited to introduce a nationwide essay writing competition centered around the theme of “The Role of Academia in Upholding the Rule of Law and Human Rights in Ethiopia.”

The goal of this competition is to encourage thoughtful analysis and academic discussion regarding the significant impact that academia has in advancing the rule of law and protecting human rights within our society.

Essay Competition Theme

The essay contest revolves around the topic of “The Role of Academia in Upholding Human Rights and the Rule of law in Ethiopia.” Contestants have the option to either produce an essay on the main subject or select a narrow sub-theme they care about and create a persuasive essay centered on it.

The essay must:

  • Be limited to a maximum of 3000 words (excluding references, bibliography, and footnotes).
  • Be written in English, spanning from a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 15 pages, excluding footnotes, and submitted as a PDF file. Page dimensions should be standard (8”x11” or A4). The font size should not be smaller than 12, with 1.5 line spacing, and it is recommended that applicants use a font like Times New Roman or Calibri for compatibility with various software programs.
  • Follow a specific referencing style (e.g., APA, Harvard, OSCOLA, etc.) for accurate citation and to prevent plagiarism.
  • Contain original, innovative, and unpublished content. Any plagiarized or previously published work will result in disqualification.
  • Be composed in professional English.

Benefits of ELSA/KAS National Essay Writing Competition for Young Ethiopian students

The cash prizes for the top three essays will be as follows:

  • First Place: 30,000 ETB
  • Second Place: 25,000 ETB
  • Third Place: 20,000 ETB

Other benefits include:

  • All students who register and submit their essays on time will be awarded Certificates of Participation.
  • The winning essays will be showcased at a workshop hosted by ELSA and KAS Office Ethiopia/African Union on May 15, 2024. Authors will have the chance to present their ideas, participate in meaningful discussions, and make valuable contributions to Ethiopia’s academic and political-legal sphere.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The essay competition is designed to stimulate critical thinking and academic discourse on how academia can contribute to the rule of law and protection of human rights in Ethiopia.
  • This essay competition is available to all Ethiopian undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral students studying law, political science, philosophy, or related social sciences in Ethiopia, who have a strong interest in the subject and wish to contribute their thoughts and ideas.

Evaluation Criteria:

The essays will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Comprehension of the concept of the rule of law and human rights, including knowledge of the laws and policies related to the rule of law in Ethiopia.
  • Analyzing and evaluating legal principles from a critical standpoint: offering a thorough assessment of the obstacles. Advancements, and areas for improvement in integrating academia to strengthen the rule of law in Ethiopia.
  • Originality of ideas: demonstrating creative thinking and original perspectives on the topic. Proposing innovative ideas for future progress, and highlighting the role of young people.
  • Structure: ensuring coherence, organization, grammar, overall writing quality, and adherence to the given guidelines.

  • In the email body, excluding the essay content, include your full name, contact address, phone number, and email address.
  • Along with the essay, applicants need to provide either their enrollment letter or current registration slips.
  • Only one essay per participant is permitted for submission.
