In collaboration with the Strengthening Advisory Capacities for Land Policy in Africa (SLGA) program, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is proud to announce the application call for the 2024 DAAD-NELGA Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. This fellowship program is designed for young academics and professionals from African Union member states, to revolutionize the field of land governance and management across the continent.

DAAD-NELGA Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

The overarching objective of the DAAD-NELGA Postdoctoral Research Fellowships is to bolster African institutions and experts, equipping them with the requisite skills and knowledge to spearhead transformative land policies.

Central to this mission is the establishment of a Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa (NELGA), a critical initiative aimed at enhancing training and capacity-building efforts in land management and policy formulation.

NELGA Postdoctoral Fellowship

The NELGA Postdoctoral Fellowships are geared towards enhancing demand-driven research and science communication, as a cornerstone for advancing land governance in Africa. Through rigorous candidate selection and engagement with key stakeholders, the program endeavors to fortify institutional capacity and foster science-based policy development.

By harnessing the expertise of scholars with a vested interest in land policy, the fellowship program is poised to drive meaningful change and catalyze sustainable development efforts across the continent.

NELGA Short-Term Research Fellowships

Complementing the Postdoctoral Fellowships are the NELGA Short-Term Research Fellowships, designed to empower young African researchers at the post-graduate level. With a focus on cultivating open research agendas and addressing pressing issues in land management and governance, these fellowships play a pivotal role in nurturing a new generation of scholars and thought leaders.

Benefits: What to Expect

  • Monthly Stipend: Recipients of the DAAD-NELGA Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are entitled to a monthly stipend of EUR 800.
  • Virtual Training Workshops: In addition to the monetary support, fellows have the opportunity to participate in virtual training workshops on Advocacy for Research Output. These workshops are designed to enhance participants’ research skills, foster collaboration, and facilitate knowledge sharing among peers.
  • Support for Scientific Publications: The program offers support for scientific publications in relevant journals. Fellows may request reimbursement of expenses incurred for publication, with a maximum limit of EUR 1500.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the DAAD-NELGA Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have completed of a PhD degree at a state or state-recognized institution of higher education.
  • Have a background in land governance/land management or a related field (e.g., land administration, land economics, urban and regional planning, geomatics).
  • Candidates must have nationality of an African country.
  • Grant of leave of absence by the home institution in case of conducting field studies or research stays abroad.
  • Female applicants are encouraged to apply to participate in the DAAD-NELGA Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
