A Brief History Of Columbia University

Columbia University, often known as Columbia University in the City of New York, is a private Ivy League research university located in New York City. It was established in 1754 as King’s College on the grounds of Trinity Church in Manhattan, and it is New York’s oldest higher education institution and the sixth oldest in the United States.

Under George II of Great Britain, Columbia was established as a colonial institution by royal charter. In 1787, it was renamed Columbia College and placed under a private board of trustees led by former students Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. The campus was relocated to its current location in Morningside Heights in 1896 and it was renamed as Columbia University.

Columbia Early And Regular Decision Acceptance Rate

Early Decision

Columbia University recently released its early decision admission numbers for the Class of 2027, which indicate an acceptance rate of 11.3%. Approximately 650 students were accepted out of 5,738 applications.

When compared to previous years, there has been a slight decrease in the number of applications from the peak reached in the Class of 2026 (6,305 applicants) and the Class of 2025 (6,435 applicants).

Despite this decline, the acceptance rate for the Class of 2027 has increased compared to the past two years, which had acceptance rates of 10.3% and 10.1% respectively. It should be noted that the acceptance rates for the Classes of 2024 and 2023 were significantly higher at 15% and 14.6% respectively, even though there were fewer applications during those years.

By comparing the early decision acceptance rate of 11.3% for the Class of 2027 to the estimated regular decision acceptance rate of around 3%, it becomes evident that applying early to Columbia University can significantly enhance an applicant’s chances of acceptance. This trend clearly demonstrates the advantage of submitting an early decision application when seeking admission to the institution.

Regular Decision

Columbia University recently released its regular decision admission numbers for the Class of 2027, revealing a highly competitive environment. The institution received a total of 51,391 applications, and approximately 1,600 students were accepted, resulting in an estimated regular-decision acceptance rate of about 3%.

When compared to previous years, there seems to be a slight decrease in the number of applications from the peak reached in the Classes of 2026 and 2025, with over 54,000 applicants. However, the acceptance rate has remained reasonably stable at around 3%.

It is worth mentioning that the acceptance rates for the Classes of 2024 and 2023 were higher, at 5% and 4% respectively, with fewer applications submitted during those years. This trend suggests that Columbia University has become more selective in recent years, making admission into the institution increasingly competitive.

SAT, ACT, And GPA Of Columbia University

For the application cycles of 2022-2023 and 2023-2024, ACT and SAT test scores will not be mandatory. Students who are unable or opt not to submit their test scores will not be disadvantaged. Columbia evaluates candidates holistically in order to determine which students are the best matches for Columbia’s unique educational experience.
