It was founded in 1793 as a men’s college using finances from the estate of Ephraim Williams, a colonist from Massachusetts Bay who was killed in the French and Indian War in 1755. It positioned itself as a “Western counterpart” to Yale and Harvard, and in the 1960s, it became formally coeducational.

The main campus of Williams College is located in Williamstown, in the Berkshires in rural northwestern Massachusetts, and includes over 100 academic, athletic, and residential facilities. Recently, Williams College released its acceptance rate for the Class of 2027. According to Liz Creighton ’01, Dean of Admission and Student Financial Services, the college admitted 858 students through the regular decision process on March 17. These students will be joining the 255 incoming students who were admitted through early decision in December.

For the regular decision round this year, Williams College received 10,315 applications, which is a decrease of more than a quarter compared to last year. The overall acceptance rate for the 2022-2023 admission cycle is 9.8 percent, showing a small increase from the historically low acceptance rates seen in previous years for the Classes of 2025 and 2026.

Apart from the 858 students who were accepted, including 14 who were initially deferred from the early decision round, the college also waitlisted 1,970 students and denied admission to 7,487 applicants. Over the past five admission cycles, an average of 35 students have been accepted from the waiting list. Last year, only one waitlisted student was admitted.

The Class of 2027 applicants were the initial group to apply under Williams College’s newly implemented all-grant financial aid program. This program removed loans and work-study requirements from the aid packages offered to students. Liz Creighton ’01, Dean of Admission and Student Financial Services expressed that although this all-grant financial aid program made Williams College an appealing choice for prospective students, it is still too early to assess its impact on the Class of 2027.

The middle 50% SAT range for new freshmen at Williams College in the Class of 2026 was between 1490 and 1550, while the ACT range was between 35 and 36. The SAT had a median score of 1520 and the ACT had a score of 35. An astounding 87% of first-year students enrolled in the 2022-23 academic year hailed from the top 10% of their high school graduating class, and an overwhelming 98% rated in the top 25%.
