ChatGPT is a revolution in usefulness according to experts although its intelligence is still zero. Pascal Kaufmann has said that the medium to measure true artificial intelligence is by its ability to deal with problems that have not been seen before.
ChatGPT Revolution in Usefulness
Generative AI systems such as DALL-E, ChatGPT, and Midjourney are all backed to revolutionize many industries. Kaufmann Pascal, an Artificial Intelligence expert has said these new AIs are great at generating both text and images that it has now become completely easy to overestimate their strengths and capabilities.
Kaufmann who is the founder of Starmind.ai and the Mindfire Group has come out to explain that the true intelligence is loosely defined as the ability to completely solve novel problems and issues, and while it is very easy to be impressed by the ability of AI’s to perform tasks such as the processing of natural language, Kaufmann argued that vast language models such as GPT-3 barely mimic intelligence without ever processing it truly. They simply lack the capacity in particular o take on challenges that they have not encountered before.
These systems for instance can easily generate poetry and even write codes simply because they have been rained on content that has been in existence. But they however cannot perform abstract tasks such as understanding humor or even feeling empathy.
Kaufmann’s Statement on AI Technologies
“There are some people that treat the term ‘AI’ like it [just means] ‘amazing innovation.’ So whenever something is amazing, it’s called AI,” Kaufmann said. “But when you are looking at the scientific perspective, you can actually measure and define intelligence. Intelligence would be measured as your capability of dealing with unseen problems, unencounted problems. Can you solve something that’s completely novel? And the large language models like ChatGPT are not able to tackle anything that it hasn’t encountered before. Therefore, it [intelligence] is zero.”
Kaufmann, despite this very limitation, has acknowledged that new generative models are a major advance in the abilities of AI and could get to revolutionize a couple of industries. He further highlighted their ability to produce creative and visual work effectively and efficiently, and in the process, reducing costs and turnaround times significantly. He also suggested that the models can as well generate more creative solutions to unique problems in contrast to humans, all thanks to their access to a huge reservoir of information.
The Value of AI in Industries
The expert however pointed out to the value of AI in industries such as filmmaking and illustration, where virtual human beings can effectively be generated and even controlled way better than their counterparts in regards to cost. He also made comments on the potential displacement of creative jobs by AI technologies in question.
And in terms of drilling down on the measurement of intelligence, the expert noted that Mindfire got a world record by solving more than 30% of puzzles in an AI test, which is a huge increase from the previous record of 20%.
Kaufmann Thinks AI Is Moving On the Right Path
Kaufmann also pointed to the fact that the GPT-4 upgrade which is being multimodal is yet another very important step on the right path. He ultimately characterized the stipulated rise of AI models such as GPT-3 and GPT-4 as a “usefulness revolution” that will get to fasten and accelerate the development of technological infrastructures.
“This is really a revolution, and it will accelerate the developments towards human-level AI,” Kaufmann stated.
