The New York City department of education is blocking user access to ChatGPT on its online devices and all of its internet networks. The AI-powered chatbot as you should know can generate conversational answers to questions by users and can even write essays, thus drawing from a large volume of online sources.

The department on Tuesday told education news website Chalkbeat that it is being restricted because of “negative impacts on student learning and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content.”

What a School System Spokesperson Said About the Development

“While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and lifelong success,” Jenna Lyle, a school system spokesperson told the outlet.

Students and faculty alike can however still connect to ChatGPT, but only on devices that are not linked to the school system. Lyle also added gat access can be requested by individuals that are interested in learning the technology that is behind the next-generation chatbot.
