The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism 2023, is now open for applications from suitably qualified Journalists who can produce informative, accurate, and compelling stories.
The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), is responsible for the establishment of June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism in 2015 in order to promote awareness of the essential role that the media plays in educating the public about cancer and cancer research. The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism was established to honor individual professional journalists who have published accurate, insightful, and compelling stories about cancer.
The AACR Biedler Prize is supported by a significant donation to the AACR from Dr. June L. Biedler, a cancer researcher, mentor, and pioneer who served on the AACR’s board of directors. The prize will acknowledge and reward outstanding journalistic coverage that improves the public’s understanding of cancer, cancer research, cancer advocacy, or cancer policy in honor of Dr. Biedler’s great contributions to advancing science and healthcare communications.

Eligibility Criteria
- The AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism is open to professional journalists working in print, broadcast, and online whose stories appear in newspapers, magazines, websites, and broadcast platforms aimed at lay public audiences.
- Individual journalists are to be honored with prizes. If, on the other hand, the submitted item is the result of contributions from all parties involved, more than one journalist may be co-nominated and chosen to earn an award.
- There are no fees involved with nominations that are submitted.
- Trade publications, institutions, and organizations are not eligible for the prize.
- Stories must have been first published between December 1, 2022, and November 30, 2023.
- The submission must contribute to a better understanding of cancer, cancer research, cancer advocacy, or cancer policy among the general public.
- The submission must be written in English or properly translated into English.
Selection Criteria
The following criteria will be used by the judging panels to evaluate qualified submissions:
- Outstanding capacity to educate the public about cancer, cancer research, or cancer policy.
- Effective and precise interpretation of cancer science or cancer policy;
- The significance and timeliness of the connected subject
- The report’s originality and creativity
- Clarity, precise and elegance of language utilized in the body of work
- Ability to educate the reader on the related topic area
- Following the deliberations of the judging panel, the primary and alternate award recipient suggestions for each category (if applicable) will be forwarded to the AACR Executive Committee for formal confirmation.
- Prize awardees will be chosen on the basis of their professional achievements, regardless of race, gender, nationality, geographic region, or religious or political beliefs.
- Ability to break new ground and/or emphasize the need for further attention or support for an underrepresented or misunderstood subject
- Overall, there is the potential for a large impact on cancer understanding, cancer research, and/or cancer policy.
Application Process And Requirements
- Individuals, whether AACR members or not, may submit nominations.
- Applicants must keep their contributions strictly confidential, and all nominations must be submitted through https://aacr.secure-platform.com/a . Nominations submitted on paper will be rejected.
- Background information of the applicant and an indication of the award category.
- Submission letter written in English (maximum of 1,000 words) that comprehensively outlines the submitted body of work and the impact of the submission on improving public understanding of cancer, cancer research, or cancer policy.
- A brief citation (maximum of 50 words) outlining the applicant’s and the submitted body of work’s key contributions to advancing public understanding of cancer, cancer research, or cancer policy.
- Biography, résumé, or curriculum vitae.
- An electronic copy (mp4, pdf, etc.) of the submitted body of work.
