YSEALI Academic Fellowship in Brunei
The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is a flagship program of the U.S. government aimed at empowering young leaders in Southeast Asia. Through a variety of initiatives, including academic fellowships, workshops, and exchanges, YSEALI seeks to equip young professionals with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to address the region’s most pressing challenges.
Program Overview
The YSEALI Academic Fellowship is a prestigious five-week program designed to immerse participants in a dynamic learning environment. Through a combination of seminars, group discussions, site visits, and hands-on activities, fellows will explore key topics such as leadership development, civic engagement, environmental sustainability, and social entrepreneurship.
The program curriculum is carefully designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring that participants are equipped to tackle real-world challenges upon their return home. Since its inception, YSEALI has engaged thousands of young leaders, creating a vibrant community committed to driving positive change.

Funding
The YSEALI Academic Fellowship is fully funded. Thanks to the generous support of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State, all participant costs are covered, including:
- Program Administration
- International travel
- Accommodation
- Meals, and incidental expenses.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the YSEALI Academic Fellowship, candidates must meet the requirements below:
- Age: Between 18 and 25 at the time of application (applicants over 25 may be considered in exceptional cases)
- Nationality: Citizens or residents of one of the following Southeast Asian countries: Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam
- Education: Full-time undergraduate students or recent graduates from accredited institutions of higher learning
- Language Proficiency: Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English
- Visa Eligibility: Eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa
- Interest and Commitment: Demonstrated interest, knowledge, or experience in areas such as civic engagement, environmental issues, social entrepreneurship, and economic development
- Leadership Potential: Strong leadership qualities and a commitment to community service, volunteerism, and mentorship
