The University of Birmingham MSc in Development Policy and Politics is offered through its International Development Department, in collaboration with the esteemed Mo Ibrahim Foundation. One scholarship will be awarded to the Candidate who fulfils the below requirements.
The Mo Ibrahim Foundation is offering the scholarship (For two years). The recipient will complete both an integrated one-year internship and the entire one-year MSc degree. The successful applicant will be able to work on research with academics and the GSDRC for six months with IDD, and then work with the team on various initiatives of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in London for another six months.
The Foundation’s goal is to “put governance at the centre of Africa’s development.” This involves taking part in the Ibrahim Forum’s Now Generation Forum, a brand-new platform for young professionals and emerging leaders in Africa, as well as the Ibrahim Governance Weekend.
Program Overview:
There is a growing understanding that development is fundamentally political, whether it occurs at the national, subnational, regional, or global levels. Development policymakers, practitioners, and scholars have come to adopt the mantra that “politics matters” in their work. The issues we confront and the opportunities at hand demand a profound grasp of the political foundations of the issues facing global growth in addition to excellent political analysis abilities.
This MSc connects theoretically and empirically grounded policy approaches to development in academia with real-world applications. Students are exposed to innovations and rigour, complexity and discussion. Bridging theory and practice, thanks to IDD’s cutting-edge research on governance, leadership, democracy, thinking and acting politically, and much more.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the criteria below:
- Have an honors degree (1st class) or equivalent
- Demonstrate proficiency in English
- Be under 30 years of age.
- Candidates must be African nationals residing in an African country, with preference given to those in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Additionally, students have the flexibility to tailor their studies through elective modules, choosing from a diverse subject across the School of Government.
