In 2012, The ALBORADA Trust established the Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund to facilitate research collaborations between researchers from the University of Cambridge (or affiliated institutions) and sub-Saharan African institutions.

The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund is a prestigious initiative that aims to strengthen research collaborations between the University of Cambridge (including affiliated institutions) and sub-Saharan African institutions.

It serves as a catalyst for initiating new partnerships or enhancing existing ones, allowing researchers to combine their expertise and tackle pressing challenges faced by African countries. The fund has already awarded 300 grants, enabling Cambridge researchers to collaborate with colleagues from 34 African nations. This edition of the fund may consider applications from North Africa.

However, limited resources, infrastructure, and opportunities often hinder the progress of African researchers. Recognizing this disparity, Cambridge-Africa was established to bridge the gap and provide much-needed support to African researchers.

Benefits of Cambridge Africa ALBORADA Research Fund

The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund provides seed funding to support research collaborations. The awards typically range from £1,000 to £20,000 for the following purposes:

  • Cost of Research, this includes reagents, fieldwork, and equipment
  • All Research-related travel costs between Cambridge and Africa
  • The fund is also for research training activities in Africa that is, setting up courses/workshops.
  • The funding can be utilized for various purposes, including research-related travel, equipment, consumables, data collection, and analysis. It is essential for applicants to provide a clear budget plan and justify the allocation of funds.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

  • The fund requires both Cambridge-based applicants and applicants from sub-Saharan Africa, to apply jointly and co-create the projects.
  • Preference will be given to applications that build new partnerships with the potential for long-term collaboration.
  • Projects should be aimed at strengthening the research capacity of the African researcher and/or the African research institution.
  • The applicants must each be at the post-doctoral level or above, and be supported by their Head of Department or equivalent.
  • Also, the two applicants should have a formal link to a research department or faculty in their home institution.
  • Applicants from Cambridge must be either working at the University of Cambridge or at a Research Institute affiliated with the University.
  • Applicants from Africa must be residents of a sub-Saharan Research Institution or University
