Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is all set to announce that he is running for president in a conversation with Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, NBC News reported on Monday.

The announcement in question will take place during a Twitter Spaces event set to take place on Wednesday at 6 PM ET, and David Sacks, who is the former PayPal product leader and tech investor, will reportedly moderate the discussion in question. Shortly after, the DeSantis campaign is expected to put out a formal campaign launch video just before taking to the campaign trail which is after Memorial Day.

Lindsey Curnutte, a spokesperson to DeSenatis, has confirmed the event in an email to The Verge Tuesday. Twitter on the other hand responded to a request for comment on Tuesday with the customary poop emoji auto-reply of the company.

The Planned Presidential Announcement of DeSantis

The planned announcement of DeSantis as you should know comes as his polling numbers against former President Donald Trump have faltered. And according to a recent Morning Consult poll, DeSantis is at the moment polling at 20 percent of GOP primary voters, which is nearly 15 percent lower than his reported December 2022 numbers.

Musk’s Relationship with Republicans

And since taking over Twitter back in November 2022, Musk has garnered major support among Republicans who have spent the last couple of years accusing social media companies and firms of wrongfully censoring conservative content and users. Trump Throughout his own presidency, championed these very types of criticisms and was ultimately banned from mainstream platforms, which is including Twitter, following the deadly January 6th riot at the US Capitol.

And shortly after taking over the company, Musk restored the Twitter account of Trump after posting a poll where he asked his followers for input on the decision. “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” Musk at the time tweeted.

Popular conservative commentators, such as former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, have begun moving their content to Twitter. And on Tuesday, Axios reported that The Daily Wire was bringing all of its podcasts over to the social media platform by the end of this month.

Musk and Governor Desantis’ Relationship

Musk according to NBC News has known Governor DeSantis ever since the pair reportedly crossed paths at a party in Austin. Both of the persons in question are reportedly close with Sacks, who is the moderator for the Twitter event set to take place on Wednesday. It is however very much still up in the air as to whether Musk plans to endorse DeSantis, despite the billionaire suggesting that he would back the Florida governor in the previous year. Musk on Friday tweeted “great statement,” in response to recent GOP presidential contender Sen. Tim Scott’s (R-SC) reported campaign announcement.
