Reddit can now translate posts on the platform. The newest feature from Reddit gives the platform the ability to translate posts into eight different languages, but the firm however is still very much experimenting with translating comments.

Reddit Can Now Translate Posts

Reddit can now translate posts in the platform into eight different languages when viewing them on the iOS or Android apps of Reddit or even on the web while logged out, as per a post from a Reddit admin (employee). To kick things off, posts can be translated into English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and even Swedish.

I tried out this new feature by looking at this post in r/France. The post normally is in French, but when logged out on the web, I can effectively translate it to English just by clicking the “Translate” link located at the top left of the post. And when logged in on the iOS app, I can see the “Translate” link, as well.

How Well Does the Translation Feature Work

Since I don’t speak or even understand French, I can’t really speak to the quality of the translation on Reddit. (The admin in a comment stated that the company is at the moment using “Google services for translations in a manner consistent with our privacy policy.”) But the translated post in English seems very fine to me.

However, you probably cannot read full translated threads on the platform just yet: Reddit revealed that it has only started experimenting with translating the comments under posts and also only on iOS and Android. Full translation of posts and comments quite seems to be the plan of Reddit, though, as the admin reportedly writes that “soon, your entire conversation experience on Reddit can be multilingual!”

Reddit Is About To Deprecate Its Previous Coins System

The post of the admin also reminds users that Reddit is about to deprecate its previous coins system, thus meaning that you soon will not be able to thank a stranger for giving you gold. The last time and day that coins will work is Tuesday, September 12th, and as per the admin, Reddit has already cut the ability to give awards on the Old Reddit design as well as on the “mobile desktop experience” (which I am guessing means mobile web).

Reddit to Introduce Some Kind of Awards System

Reddit has however promised that there will be some kind of awards system down the line but it has not shared any details on the matter just yet. Android Authority however just recently found evidence in the Android app of Reddit that the new system may allow users to turn gold or Reddit karma into real money, which doesn’t sound much like an excellent replacement.
