Batman actor Kevin Conroy has died at the age of 66 after a brief battle with cancer is representatives on Friday confirmed. The actor was best known for voicing DC’s iconic superhero in Batman: The Animated Series as well as the Arkham Video Games.

And after he began his career on stage where he played Hamlet in 1984 and also showed up in TV shows such as Dynasty, Another World, and Cheers, he was cast in a career-defining role as Batman, with the animated series starting in 1992.

“Kevin’s warm heart, delightfully deep laugh, and pure love of life will be with me forever,” Andrea Romano, the director who at the time cast Conroy in the role, in a statement said.

The Actor Also Played the Superhero in the Follow-Up Batman Shows

The actor also played the superhero in the follow-up shows Batman Beyond, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited by DC as well as many other animated movies such as the incredible mask of Phantasm. He also portrayed a live version of the character in the Arrowverse’s 2019 Crisis on Infinite Earth crossover event.

Conroy in the early parts of this year wrote a deeply personal story for DC Pride 2022 comic anthology in regards to how coming out as gay helped him to find his voice as Bruce Wayne as well as his alter-ego.

Fellow Actor Hails Conroy As A ‘Brilliant Actor’

Fellow actor who played the role of Joker in the ‘90s animated series and Arkham games hailed and referred to Conroy as a ‘brilliant actor.’

“For several generations, he has been the definitive Batman. It was one of those perfect scenarios where they got the exact right guy for the exact right part, and the world was better for it,” he stated in a statement. “His rhythms and subtleties, tones and delivery —  that all also helped inform my performance. He was the ideal partner — it was such a complementary, creative experience. I couldn’t have done it without him. He will always be my Batman.”

Conroy Was a Regular on the Convention Circuit

Conroy also was a regular on the convention circuit, warmly greeting fans. Diane Pershing, who played the role of Ivy in the animated series, in a Facebook post, noted that he will “be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world.”

Paul Dini Paid Tribute to the Late Actor with a Solemn Tweeted Image of Batman

One of the producers of the animated series, Paul Dini, paid tribute to the late actor with a solemn tweeted image of batman looking over the skyline of Gotham city.

“Kevin brought a light with him everywhere,” Dini in a stamen said. “Whether in the recording booth giving it his all, feeding first responders during 9/11, or making sure every fan who ever waited for him had a moment with their Batman. A hero in every sense of the word. Irreplaceable. Eternal.”
