The collaboration between the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) marks a significant step forward in the implementation of the payment-integrated ID initiative. Which in case you don’t know aims to revolutionize social and financial services in Nigeria.

Leveraging AfriGo, a domestic card scheme launched by the CBN in January 2023, this partnership will power the operations of the new ID system.

What is The Primary Goal of This Initiative?

The primary goal of this initiative, according to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), is to address the critical need for physical identification by providing cardholders with a multifunctional card.

This card will not only serve as proof of identity but also grant access to government and private social services. Additionally, it will promote financial inclusion, particularly for marginalized individuals, empowering citizens and fostering greater participation in nation-building endeavors.

The Mandate of the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007

The rollout of this initiative aligns with the mandate of the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, which tasks the commission with enrolling and issuing General Multipurpose Cards (GMPCs) to Nigerians and legal residents.

Only individuals registered with the National Identification Number (NIN) will be eligible to apply for the card. Thus ensuring compliance with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Concerns Regarding the Challenges Associated With the Current NIN Registration Process

Despite concerns raised by some Nigerians regarding the challenges associated with the current NIN registration process, including long queues and delays, the NIMC has clarified that registered citizens and legal residents will have multiple avenues to obtain the new cards.

These avenues include online platforms, commercial banks, participating agencies or agents, and NIMC offices nationwide, offering greater accessibility and convenience.

The Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Project Ecosystem Steering Committee

Moreover, the federal government’s recent announcement regarding the inauguration of the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Project Ecosystem Steering Committee underscores its commitment to advancing digital identity solutions.

This committee will play a crucial role in guiding the strategic direction of the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project. Which as you should know, seeks to establish secure and verifiable digital identities for all Nigerians.

By enhancing service delivery, governance, and opportunities in the digital economy, this project aims to drive sustainable development and progress across the nation.
