It’s been three years since the PS5 was initially released, and a newly designed version is set to make fitting it into your TV cabinet much easier. This redesigned PS5 was surprisingly announced and will be available in November. It’s 30% smaller and weighs between 18% to 24% less, depending on the specific model you choose.
New Slimmer PlayStation 5 Arrives in November Having a Detachable Drive
Sony had been widely anticipated to launch a slimmer PS5 for some time, and that expectation has now materialized. However, it’s worth noting that the price doesn’t appear to be decreasing; in fact, for the digital version, it’s increasing by $50.
The new PS5 offers an optional snap-on Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, allowing users to choose to upgrade a digital model with disc functionality at a later time. This flexibility can help alleviate decision-making concerns.
The PS5 with a disc drive is priced at $500, while the digital-only model is $450. Additionally, the Ultra HD Blu-ray drive on its own is available for $80. This allows users to tailor their gaming experience to their preferences and budget.
The New Digital PS 5, A Bit Expensive
The updated PS5 with a Blu-ray drive maintains the same price as the current model, but the new digital-only PS5 is $50 more expensive. Both versions, however, feature larger 1TB hard drives.
Additionally, both models will include a horizontal stand for laying the systems flat. If you prefer to stand the console upright, you’ll have the option to purchase a separate vertical stand for $30. This allows users to choose their preferred configuration and accessories.
Console covers are making a comeback for the redesigned PS5, with a fresh design to match the updated form factor. Starting in early 2024, PS5 owners will have the option to choose from all-matte black, volcanic red, cobalt blue, or sterling silver cover colors, each priced at $55.
Sony is having a significant hardware year for PlayStation, having launched the PSVR 2 in February and introducing a second-screen controller handheld accessory called PlayStation Portal, set to arrive in November.
While Sony hasn’t provided a specific launch date for the redesigned models, it has mentioned that the current stock of older PS5s will gradually be replaced with the newer slimmer models. This allows for a refreshed and customized gaming experience.
