Moses Mapesa Research Grant for African Doctoral and Masters Students (USD $5,000)

Call for Applications has been announced for the 2024 Moses Mapesa Research Grant! The African World Resources Fund (AWHF), is thrilled to announce this Grant which provides financial support to African Doctoral and master’s students studying natural and cultural resources.

The goal of the Moses Mapesa Research Grant is to advance studies (especially fieldwork support) on World Heritage and provisionally designated African sites.

The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) was established in 2006 as an intergovernmental organization, to support the effective conservation and promotion of cultural and natural heritage of outstanding universal value in Africa.

Benefits of Moses Mapesa Research Grant

The Moses Mapesa Research Grant amounts offered to eligible Candidates depend on research proposals. The maximum amount to be awarded is  USD $5000.

The fieldwork research must be conducted in 9 months maximum from the signature of the contract (May 2025 to February 2026).

The Moses Mapesa Research Grant will support research projects focused on the following topics:

  • Traditional Management Systems
  • Risk management and Preparedness
  • Heritage in Conflict and Post-conflict situations
  • Heritage management and conservation
  • Heritage and Climate Change
  • Heritage and Economics/Entrepreneurship
  • Heritage and Sustainable Development
  • Heritage Promotion and Awareness
  • Heritage and Digital Technologies,
  • Heritage and Law.

Eligibility Criteria for Moses Mapesa Research Grant

This grant is available to students who meet the requirements below:

  • The student must be currently registered or about to register in a Doctoral or Masters programme (Masters 2 for Francophone countries) 2025, at an African university;
  • Carrying out dissertation research in the field of either natural or cultural heritage at an African World Heritage Site
  • Candidates must be fluent in English, French or Portuguese
  • Must nationals of an African Union Member State which is party to the World Heritage Convention.

 Grant Requirements:

The following requirements must be met if a student is awarded a grant:

  • A detailed research description must be submitted at the beginning of the grant along with proof of degree registration;
  • A final report containing the research results or dissertation/thesis at the final stage as well as a financial report must be submitted at the end;
  • All documents must be presented in either French, English, or Portuguese;
  • The projects MUST be implemented within 9 months

Final Decision and Notification: 31 January 2025.
