Microsoft Has Just Released an Emergency Fix for the Famous Acropalypse Bug

Tech company Microsoft has acted fast in patching up the troublesome acropalypse bug that was reported a couple of days ago. This bug could allow information cropped out of images by the Windows screenshot tools in question to be recovered.

And according to BleepingComputer, Microsoft has now issued an OOB (out-of-band or emergency) update that helps to fix the issue, which as you should know has the technical designation of CVE-2023-28303. Microsoft at the moment is recommending that users apply the now-released update at their earliest opportunity, as you might expect.

Applying the update is not that difficult at all. to do this, go to the Microsoft Store, click the Library icon on the left, and then pick the Get updates option. This should automatically force the patch to be applied if it hasn’t already been installed automatically on your system.

How the Bug Works

The bug in question is very similar to one that has affected the Markup feature on Google Pixel phones. This means that images and screenshots cropped in the Windows 11 Snipping Tool and the Windows 10 Snip and Sketch tool could be reportedly compromised.

the CVE-2023-28303 vulnerability essentially means that parts of a PNG or JPEG image that has been cropped out are not removed from the file after it’s saved again properly. Those cropped-out sections could include sensitive information such as bank account details or even medical records, for instance.

The Patch Will Not Fix Any Files That Have Been Cropped Already

It is however very important to note that applying this very patch will not fix any files that have been cropped already, only the ones that are edited in the future can be affected by the update directly. You’ll need to re-crop any existing images in order to be sure the spare parts of the picture have been removed properly and the right way.
