Mawazo Fellowship Programme 2023 for African Students – How to Apply

Mawazo Institute has announced the application Call for the 2023 Mawazo Fellowship Programme. The Fellowship is designed to support African women PhD students from across the continent working on emerging development issues.

Scholars will be provided with Virtual, on-demand training, Mentorship, and Access to funding that supports research activities, conference travel, research translation, and cross-sector collaborations

The duration of the Mawazo Fellowship Programme is a 15-month, non-residential, where Fellows are expected to join a virtual training programme that features professional development courses designed by the Mawazo Institute.

The 2023 edition of the program will support 40 women across Africa. Meanwhile, interested and eligible PhD students are highly encouraged to apply especially those working in the following thematic areas:

  • Agriculture and Food Security
  • Business, Trade, and the Economy
  • Climate Change, Natural Resources, and the Environment
  • Education and Pedagogy
  • Energy and Engineering
  • Gender, Rights, and Governance
  • Information and Technology
  • Life and Health Sciences
  • Mathematical and Physical Sciences

Fellows Participating in the Mawazo Institute Fellowship will receive the following benefits:

  • Fellows will get to participate in Mawazo’s in-house virtual training and professional development programme, offered through the Mawazo Learning Exchange (MLEx) e-learning platform
  • Opportunity to connect to expert and peer mentors through a structured mentorship programme,
  • Fellows will be exposed to leaders from academia, industry, government and other sectors
  • Participants will receive Funding for research activities with access to grants worth up to US$2,500
  • A $500 stipend for discretionary use
  • Fellows will be given Data bundles worth $150 to help access the MLEx platform
  • Support for editorial and Research from the Mawazo team and our partners

Eligibility Criteria for Mawazo Fellowship Programme Qualification

  • The candidate must be a woman
  • Eligible to participate include Assigned Female at Birth (AFAB) non-binary, AFAB gender non-conforming, and other AFAB genderqueer individuals, who have historically been excluded from decision-making spaces.
  • Only citizens of an African country can apply
  • Good command of written and spoken English is a significant requirement that must be met by applicants
  • Must be enrolled for their PhD at an accredited university in an African country
  • Must have completed their course work (if applicable) and passed their departmental or graduate school proposal defence such as in the dissertation/thesis phase of their PhD
  • Candidates are expected to show that their PhD research is related to African development and is relevant to a global, regional, national or subnational policy priority
  • Must be seen to have an innovative research-based solution to transform Africa through their research
  • Applicants must have the potential for leadership both within and outside academia, and a strong passion for leveraging their expertise to impact society
  • Expected to be available to fully participate in the programme in 2023-2024

  • A current CV of 2-page
  • A Confirm letter of current enrolment in an accredited PhD programme
  • Confirm letter showing completed course work (if applicable)
  • Recommendation letter from PhD supervisor
  • Recommendation letter from a second referee
