Applications are currently welcomed for the Fellowship for Advancing Science Journalism in Africa and the Middle East. This brand new fellowship, organized by the Knight Science Journalism Program (KSJ) at the esteemed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), takes inspiration from the remarkable life and career of Mohammed Yahia, an Egyptian science journalist. The initiative has been developed in collaboration with Springer Nature, the publisher responsible for Nature Middle East, which significantly contributed to science reporting in the region during Yahia’s tenure from 2010 to 2023.
Knight Science Journalism Fellowship for Advancing Science Journalism in Africa & the Middle East 2024
The primary objective of this fellowship is to enhance the training of a journalist hailing from Africa or the Middle East. By doing so, they can foster a culture of exceptional science and health journalism within these regions while also promoting awareness of their advancements to the international community.
The fellowship will span one semester, commencing in the fall of the academic year in 2024. Held at KSJ located in MIT, the fellow will participate alongside other fellows in a comprehensive program of study, attending seminars, and training workshops, and engaging in educational field trips hosted by various universities in Cambridge and Boston throughout the semester.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must:
- Based in Africa or the Middle East and have a minimum of three years’ experience as journalists reporting on science, health, or environmental topics within the region.
- Work as journalists, writers, editors, producers, illustrators, filmmakers, or photojournalists.. This includes contributions to newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and digital media.
The selected participant for The Fellowship at MIT will be expected to:
- Live in the Boston-Cambridge area on a full-time basis from August 16, 2024, to mid-December 2024.
- Abstain from engaging in paid professional work outside of The Fellowship, unless explicit written permission is granted by the director. ·
- Engage in field trips, seminars, and required training programs arranged by KSJ.
- Develop a learning schedule that includes at least one science course. Fellows can attend classes at MIT, Harvard, and other nearby universities.
Required Documents
Every candidate must provide the following documents:
- Statement of Purpose: Furnish a description, within 500 words, detailing your reasons for applying to the Fellowship for Advancing Science Journalism in Africa and the Middle East, and how it corresponds with your career goals.
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae: Furnish a concise overview of your educational background, employment history, and professional achievements. (Freelancers should include a list of freelance assignments completed within the past 12 months, including each story, publication or broadcast venue, and date of publication or broadcast.)
- Three Work Samples: Submit three (3) relevant work samples that best showcase your interests and capabilities. If any work was not produced in English, please provide a translation.
- Letter of Professional Reference: Supply at least one (1) letter of recommendation; additional letters are optional. The letter should be from someone familiar with your work and should comment on your journalistic abilities and dedication. Applicants will need to provide the name and email address of their recommenders in the application form, and letter requests will be sent to the recommenders automatically.
