Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) 2024 (Up to $60,000 Grant)

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) 2024 is a research grant program that aims to identify and support exceptional research proposals in low- or middle-income countries. It is part of the Global Development Awards Competition 2024. The focus of the 2024 theme is “Sustainable Climate Action for Human-Centered Development”.

The program will provide grants worth US$ 60,000 to three winning projects. These awards will be given to researchers who have proposed innovative and promising ideas to improve our understanding of development issues and provide well-researched policy implications to address relevant developmental problems.

Grants

  • The recipient of the first prize in the competition will be awarded a grant of US$ 30,000.
  • The second and third-place winners will be awarded grants of US$ 20,000 and US$ 10,000 respectively.
  • These funds will be allocated to support the research projects proposed by the winners, assisting them in carrying out their research until completion.
  • The awardees will be paired with renowned academic experts in their respective fields, who will serve as their Scientific and Technical Advisors.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The Global Development Awards Competition, specifically the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD), is open only to citizens or permanent residents of low or middle-income countries. The eligibility of countries is determined by the World Bank.
  • All participants must be below 45 years of age by December 31st, 2025. Applicants who will be 45 years of age or older by January 1st, 2025, are considered ineligible.
  • Proposals that have already received funding from other sources are not eligible for consideration for the ORD unless the proposal clearly outlines how the funds provided by the ORD will complement the existing funds to complete the research.
  • Staff members of multilateral and bilateral organizations, including the UN agencies, The World Bank, IME, IADB, and UKaid, among others, are not eligible to apply for the ORD competition.
  • Any proposals or papers resulting from full or partial GDN-funded activities such as Global Research Projects and Regional Research Competitions cannot be submitted for consideration for the ORD competition.
  • GDN is committed to supporting female researchers and encourages them to participate and apply.

Review Criteria

During the evaluation process, the proposals will be assessed based on the following metrics:

Academic quality

  • Quality of the research question formulated
  • Quality of methodology and methods chosen to answer the research question
  • Quality of literature review
  • Originality and Innovativeness
  • Ethics

Clarity of the links to policy

  • Link to specific development outcomes
  • The specific relevance to the policy process

Feasibility

  • Timeline
  • Budget
  • Research team
