The Hawaii Pacific Foundation (HPF) Doctoral Research Award is a grant provided by the East-West Center, offering up to $20,000 in funding to support doctoral research. Its purpose is to promote educational opportunities for Native Hawaiians and assist exceptional doctoral students in conducting high-quality research that contributes to the understanding and advancement of issues relevant to the Native Hawaiian community.

The awarded funds can be utilized for various research-related expenses such as tuition, institution fees, books, living expenses, equipment, travel supplies, software, and more. The award duration extends up to six months, and it is highly recommended that recipients reside at the East-West Center during this time.

The East-West Center will facilitate connections between the awardee and their extensive network of scholars who can offer assistance in documenting their research findings. Eligible students from universities other than the University of Hawai’i are encouraged to apply, especially those who require access to resources in Hawai’i or residency at the East-West Center in Honolulu.

After finishing their research, the recipients are encouraged to share their discoveries with the East-West Center and the community to maximize their influence.

  • The successful applicants will receive a grant of $20,000, which can be utilized for various purposes related to their research. These purposes include covering tuition and/or institution fees, purchasing books, supporting living expenses, acquiring equipment, obtaining travel supplies, acquiring software, and covering other expenses directly associated with conducting their research.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicant must be enrolled in a doctoral program at a recognized university and be actively engaged in research.
  • The research project should focus on topics that are significant to the Native Hawaiian community.

You are required to complete and submit your scholarship application by 11:59 PM (Hawaii Standard Time) on May 15. Please ensure that you have the following documents ready for upload to your online application:

  • Research prospectus, including:
  • title
  • abstract
  • research questions
  • theoretical and/or conceptual framework
  • overview of research design and methodology
  • Statement of one’s positionality with a particular emphasis on the relationship to the Native Hawaiian community.
  • A curriculum vitae or resume
  • A budget proposal indicating how the award funds will be distributed
  • Transcripts: Unofficial transcripts can be submitted during the application process, but official transcripts will be required for successful awardees.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two academic references are mandatory, with one being from the applicant’s graduate advisor at their home institution, confirming their candidacy or thesis progress.
