Nigeria gained her independence from the British government on “October 1st 1960”. The government of Nigeria however, marked the day as Independence Day in 1961. The federal representatives further set the day as a work-free day for all citizens to celebrate their country.

Independence Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the pronouncement made and freedom gained. Hence, it is also a season and period to show respect to all elite who ensure the independence was a success.

Today, “October 1st 2022” Nigeria clocked “62” years. Since it falls on Saturday, the governmental body has declared “Monday, October 3rd” as a work-free day to celebrate the freedom the country has gained.

Today Nigeria celebrates its Independence Day! On this day in 1960, the most populous country in Africa achieved independence from Great Britain.
Nigeria became a British protectorate in 1901. The period of British rule lasted till 1960 when an independence movement led to the country being granted independence. Nigeria first became a republic in 1963, but succumbed to military rule three years later, after a bloody coup.
