The Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting is an annual award that recognizes exceptional investigative reporting that contributes to the improvement of government conduct, the creation of public policies, or the practice of politics with greater effectiveness and ethical standards.
The financial support for the Goldsmith Awards Program is provided by an annual grant from the Goldsmith Fund of the Greenfield Foundation. The program is administered by the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Although submission topics can include foreign policy, they will only qualify if they have a direct impact on national, regional, or local public policy within the United States.
Program Overview
In 2024, there is a plan to present a special recognition for explanatory and/or investigative reporting that specifically examines the operations of government and the execution of public policies. Outstanding works will delve into societal or governance issues and employ a perspective focused on solutions to illustrate the most effective and efficient ways in which government can address those problems.
Submissions will be evaluated by the judging committee for possible recognition under the Investigative Reporting Prize and/or the special citation. The eligibility criteria for the special recognition are identical to those specified for the Investigative Prize.
Benefits:
- The winning entry of the prize will be awarded $25,000, while five finalist entries will each receive $10,000. The monetary amount is paid directly to the credited authors of the winning and nominated entries, rather than their respective organizations.
Eligibility Criteria:
- The Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting only accepts submissions from news media in the United States. This includes newspapers, magazines, broadcast media, radio, podcasts, and online news organizations.
- The original broadcast or publication of the entry must have taken place between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023.
- Each news organization is allowed to submit a maximum of two entries. If the entries were produced in collaboration with another news organization. The lead news organization must submit the entry and mention any secondary partner organizations or collaborators. If your organization is listed as a secondary partner or collaborator in an entry submitted by another news organization, it does not count toward your two allowed entries.
- Books are not eligible for submission to this prize.

- Nominations for the 2024 Goldsmith Prize must be submitted by 11:59pm on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.
- Each submission should include a brief summary of the entry in one sentence, and a description of the actual or potential impact of the investigative report. And an explanation of how the story originated, and details of the reporting process.
- Some entries may consist of a series of articles on a specific topic. Please limit your submission to a maximum of 5 installments. Additional sidebars, interactive features, or multimedia elements are allowed and do not count as installments.
- The information provided, such as the names of the authors and the titles of the work, must be accurate and final at the time of submission. This information will be used in a press release if your entry is chosen as a finalist.
- Any corrections or clarifications made to the story after its initial publication must be clearly indicated and explained.

- URL: It is your responsibility to ensure that the URL is accessible outside of your organization. If the entry content is behind a paywall, you must provide judges with a way to view it, such as login details or a private URL. The URLs must remain active throughout the contest period. If your entry includes multiple articles or installments, please include the URL of a single landing page or index that provides access to all of them.
- PDF: To create a printer-friendly version, merge all the installments into one cohesive PDF document. Textual material (newspaper, magazine, online news organizations) should be formatted in one column. For broadcast, video, or audio submissions, include a PDF of the transcript.
