Guess what? Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is set to launch the Tap n Go transport platform today, Monday, February 19, 2024.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) conducted a trial run of the Tap n’ Go app in December 2023 in Accra, covering various locations like the airport, East Legon, the University of Ghana, Circle/Kaneshie, and Dansoman.

What Tap n’ Go is All About

According to the government, Tap n’ Go is more than just a typical ride-hailing service. In addition to the standard online service app, the Tap n’ Go app includes features like ‘private dropping’ (private cars that also serve as taxis) and ‘metered service’ (where you can hail a taxi and a meter calculates the fare).

There are two apps to explore: Tap n’ Go for users and Tap n’ Go Driver for taxi drivers interested in joining the platform. Both apps are available for download on the Google Play and Apple App Stores. Taxi drivers wishing to participate in the service can use their Ghana Cards for registration.

Ghana’s Ride-Hailing Industry

It appears that the government is entering the ride-hailing industry by launching its version. However, the key question remains whether they can effectively scale this initiative and convince local taxi and trotro (privately owned minibus shared taxis) operators to embrace technology for their services.

Many details are yet to be clarified, such as the earnings potential for drivers. Will the government take a commission? Or will it be commission-free? Who will oversee the taxi metering process?
