The Frédéric Bastiat Fellowship is a competitive one-year program designed for graduate students pursuing master’s, juris doctoral, and doctoral degrees in fields such as economics, law, political science, and public policy.

The primary goal of this fellowship is to familiarize students with the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy as fundamental academic underpinnings for modern policy analysis, policy-oriented academic research, and other practical topics.

Fellows will have the opportunity to delve into how this framework is employed across various subjects (including entrepreneurship, technological innovation, public health, regulation, immigration, natural disasters, and military conflicts, federal and state fiscal policy) through a series of colloquia, where they will engage with Mercatus scholars who specialize in policy analysis and policy-related academic research.

Participants will also become part of a network comprising Mercatus students, alumni, and scholars actively involved in leading-edge research within contemporary political economy.

  • All necessary reading materials
  • Travel and accommodation expenses for attending the Mercatus Center colloquia

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants who meet the following three criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Enrollment in an accredited graduate program for the upcoming academic year, such as master’s, juris doctoral, and doctoral programs, including but not limited to MA, MPP, LLM, JD, and PhD degree programs.
  • Availability to attend four-weekend colloquia during the upcoming academic year.
  • Interest in public policy and Mercatus’ research and outreach approach within current public policy discussions.

  • Your academic journey in graduate school
  • Your research interests and ongoing projects
  • Your knowledge of Mercatus scholars and their research
  • Your objectives for participating in the program.
  • An updated resume/CV
  • A series of short answer questions.
