Facebook, Instagram, and Threads are gradually returning to normalcy after experiencing a widespread outage lasting approximately two hours. Users encountered difficulties accessing these three platforms, which are owned by Meta, starting at around 10 AM ET. Additionally, some users faced login issues with their Meta Quest headsets.

What Users Experienced During the Outage

During the outage, Facebook users found themselves logged out of their accounts, while Instagram users were unable to refresh their feeds. Similarly, Threads users encountered error messages stating, “Sorry, something went wrong. Try again.” Reports on Downdetector quickly surged for all three platforms, and the global impact of the issue was noted by network tracker NetBlocks. Notably, WhatsApp remained unaffected and continued to function normally.

Meta Acknowledged the Issue on Its Status Page

Meta acknowledged the issue on its status page, posting a message at 10:17 AM ET stating, “We are aware of an issue impacting Facebook Login. Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” By 12:07 PM ET, the status page indicated that Meta was “recovering from an earlier outage impacting Facebook Login, and services are in the process of being restored.”

Meta’s Response to Inquiries

In response to inquiries, Facebook directed The Verge to a statement from Meta communications head Andy Stone on X, Threads’ primary competitor. Stone acknowledged that the company was “aware people are having trouble accessing our services” and later issued an apology for any inconvenience caused by the “technical issue” that hindered access to Meta’s services.

Tuesday’s outage evoked memories of a similar incident involving Meta in 2021 when a configuration issue led to the temporary unavailability of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for several hours.
