Many consumer and environmental organizations assert that this is false because Apple depends on buying carbon credits to reach carbon neutrality, according to a Financial Times report. This indicates that while Apple did emit carbon emissions in the process of making the Apple Watch 9, the money used to purchase these credits will go toward initiatives like reforestation, which absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
“It’s misleading to consumers to give the impression that buying the Watch has no impact on the climate at all,” even if these projects truly do fully offset Apple’s carbon emissions, argued a policy officer at the non-profit Carbon Market Watch, according to Gilles Dufrasne.
Apple’s Strategy has Several Advantages
The notion is that by funding these initiatives, Apple totally offsets its carbon footprint. However, others contend that this strategy is flawed. While it’s definitely wise to be suspicious of any promises of carbon neutrality, it is important to note that Apple seems to be doing more for the environment than many other large corporations.
In addition to using carbon credits, Apple also uses a lot of recycled materials, clean electricity, and non-air transportation. Simply put, more and more of its products are sent or moved by rail instead of by airplane.
