Young Journalist Award Details

Since 2013, the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award has been a platform to recognize and celebrate the exceptional talent of young journalists in the media profession. This prestigious award provides an opportunity for brilliant young journalists to showcase their investigative skills and hold those in power accountable.

Organized in partnership with the UK’s Foreign Press Association (FPA), the annual competition culminates in an awards event held in London, where the winners are honored.

About the Thomson Foundation

Established in 1962, the Thomson Foundation is a London-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to media development. It was the first charitable foundation with a specific objective of training journalists in developing countries. With its 50th anniversary celebrated in 2012, the foundation has been at the forefront of empowering journalists and fostering excellence in journalism worldwide.

Eligibility Criteria for the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award

To be eligible for the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: Applicants must be 30 years old or younger.
  • Nationality: Applicants should be from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of less than $20,000.
  • Language: You can submit entries in any language, but you must accompany them with an accurate English-language translation.
  • All Applicants must be reporting from their home country, as defined by the GNI, or from another country that fits the same criteria.
  • Additionally, applicants are required to provide an explanation of any collaborations undertaken with colleagues or external organizations in the stories they submit.
  • All Journalists entering for the FPA award must also include a written statement, not exceeding 200 words per story. This includes a summary of the content.
