World Teacher Day is celebrated every October 5th it is a special day dedicated to recognizing and honoring the contributions teachers have made to society. Teachers play an important role in the lives of the present and next generation as they impact knowledge and values into the lives of their students.

The day is set aside to reflect on their contributions and the impact they have made in encouraging students to pursue their dreams with the knowledge they share.

World Teachers Day is more or less an appreciation day as the best way to celebrate someone who has been extremely beneficial is by showing appreciation forwards their value and hard work.

The day is also used as a medium to address the challenges faced by teachers such as inadequate training, low salaries, and lack of resources.

History of World Teacher Day

World Teachers Day began on October 5, 1966, when a conference was held to discuss the status of teachers.

The conference was done in Paris by UNESCO United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) and ILO (International Labor Organization).

During the conference a recommendation was made to recognize teachers by setting a day aside to celebrate them, this recommendation was adopted by UNESCO and ILO.

The recommendation led to the creation of World Teachers Day. It was first celebrated in 1994 and it has since been celebrated every year in over 100 countries.

Activities to Celebrate World Teachers Day

World Teachers Day is usually celebrated with several activities, below are some of them;

  • Cultural performances by students
  • Appreciation of teachers with gifts, flowers, and cards
  • Seminars are held to advocate for better working conditions for teachers

World Teachers Day is celebrated every October 5th and it always comes with a theme. The theme for World Teacher Day 2023 was “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: the Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage”.

For 2024, the theme will also be given and it will be discussed and talked about come October 5th, 2024 which falls on a Saturday.
