It will interest you to know that up to 408 academics have had their dissertations supported by the program since 1988, and many of them have gone on to significant careers in research, higher education, and policymaking. USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship Program 2024-25 – Details

The Peace Scholar initiative collaborates with the Minerva Research project to sponsor new fellowships. The program presently awards up to 18 fellowships each year, and awards assist in funding both the dissertation study’s research and writing phases.

Individuals who are members of underrepresented groups in diplomacy and global politics, peace and conflict studies, and security studies, are encouraged to apply. Before we explore further the details of this Fellowship, let’s discuss briefly about the United States Institute of Peace.

About the United States Institute of Peace(USIP)

The promotion of conflict prevention and resolution internationally is the responsibility of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). USIP is an American federal organization that offers training in diplomacy, mediation, and other peace-building techniques as well as research, analysis, and training. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

A national “peace academy” had been proposed for years before the USIP was created in 1984 as a result of Congressional legislation that President Ronald Reagan had signed into law. The Institute is nonpartisan and independent, avoiding external interference. It’s only source of finance is through a congressional allocation.

With up to fifteen members, the Institute is governed by a bipartisan board of directors which must include the secretary of defense, the secretary of state, and the president of the National Defense University; who are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

Benefits of USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship Program

  • The United States Institute of Peace (USIP), awards funds for up to 18 Peace Scholars for a duration of 10-month, non-residential fellowship.
  • Additionally, Peace Scholars receive stipends of up to $20,000 which is usually paid directly to the individual in three tranches.
  • Please note that Peace Scholar awards may not be deferred.

Eligibility Criteria for USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship Program

To be considered eligible for the USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship Program 2024-25, Candidates must meet the conditions below:

  • Candidates must Ph.D. programs with high-quality, policy-relevant research that will deepen their understanding of conflict management, peacebuilding, and other applicable security-related studies.
  • Preference is given to applications that are closely related to the USIP Issue Areas and/or research priorities of the Minerva Research Initiative.
