The YPP examination is held once a year in different subject areas, depending on the needs of the UN. The 2022-2023 application is ongoing and will be ending on the 31st of December 2023.

About United Nations Young Professionals Programme

The United Nations Young Professionals Programme is an annual initiative focused on selecting and recruiting distinguished and highly qualified young professionals from different parts of the world.

Every year, over 50,000 candidates from a pre-selected list of invited member states, apply for a chance to work as an international civil servant with the United Nations Secretariat. Successful applicants are invited to take part in a professional development program so that they can start a successful career with the organization.

Furthermore, the UN YPP Salary is a good starting point for a young professional. This made the selection process highly sought-after by many young professionals, making it highly competitive. Out of more than 50,000 applicants, it is estimated that the United Nations YPP acceptance rate is around 100 individuals.

Criteria For UN YPP 2023

  • Must be a national of a participating country
  • Must hold at least a first-level university degree relevant for the exam(at least a relevant Bachelor’s degree or a 3-year equivalent degree)
  • Must be 32 years old or younger in the year of the examination.
  • Must be fluent in either English or French

  • Fill up the following: “Given the name” that is your birth name, “middle name,” “family name,” “user ID,” “password,” “confirm password,” “primary email,” “alternate email,” and date of birth. Click on “register”

Application Process

  • Review the job openings, to make sure that you meet up with the criteria before applying. See job openings here
  • Watch the YPP Application Guide Video before applying for the YPP job. Also a general UN “Applicant Guide” is available in Inspira just log in and click on the “Manuals” link at the top of the page. You will see it there.
  • Applications will be screened to determine if you meet the basic eligibility requirements (i.e., nationality, age, education, language).

If more than 40 applicants from the same country are eligible for an exam area, those applicants will be screened and ranked based on the highest level of education completed, knowledge of official UN languages, and relevant work experience.

Where the exam occurs in two stages, then 60 applicants per country/per exam area may be invited to the first exam stage, with a maximum of 40 per country/per exam proceeding to the second stage.

Application Requirements

  • Respond to the screening questions carefully. They are intended to verify your eligibility and help to automatically screen your applications.
  • Enter your nationality for YPP consideration in the field marked

“Country of Nationality”. “Nationality at Birth” and “Other Nationalities” are not considered for YPP eligibility. Also, attach a government-issued photo ID with your nationality listed.

  • Select the Main Course of Study and Field of Study options from the pull-down menu that best reflects your education. In a situation where you do not find the exact degree title listed in the menu options, explain the difference under the “Additional Comments” section. Avoid selecting “Other” in these fields and attach documentation of degrees obtained. Also, the “Specialization” field will not be considered in the screening.
  • Work experience is not an eligibility requirement for YPP, but may be used to rank candidates. Try to be precise and concise about your work experience.
  • Candidates must be fluent in all these four areas; speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English or French. Indicating anything less than “Fluent” in any of those areas will result in your disqualification.
  • All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.

When is the UN YPP Application 2022-2023

The application period for UN YPP is from November 1st to December 31st, 2022.

What are UN YPP Minimum Requirements?

The UN YPP examination is an annual event and candidates must meet the basic eligibility criteria of the current year to be able to apply. The basic requirements are:

  • You must be 32 years old or younger in the year of the examination. The minimum age, to be eligible to apply, is 18 years old.
  • Fluency in all four areas (speaking, writing, reading, and understanding) of English OR French is required.
  • Nationality: The UN YPP changes its participating countries every year to ensure diversity within the UN Secretariat workforce.
