Open Application – St Andrews Prize for the Environment 2024 (Up to $100,000 Prize)

The St Andrews Prize for the Environment is an important global initiative led by the University of St Andrews, which acknowledges and supports groundbreaking and innovative solutions to environmental problems, including those relating to climate change. Since its inception in 1998, the St Andrews Prize has granted more than US$2.5 million to individuals and organizations from around the world who have developed imaginative solutions that contribute to environmental protection and promote sustainability in society.

In its 26th year, the Prize aims to celebrate the individuals and ideas that are working towards solving the most significant challenge of our time.

Benefits

  • The winner of the prize will be awarded $100,000 USD, while the runner(s)-up will receive $25,000 USD.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The St Andrews Prize encourages individuals and organizations, including community groups, involved in projects that focus on environmental protection or contribute to sustainable development to apply.
  • One of the main objectives of the prize is to drive significant advancements in addressing environmental issues. Therefore, they are particularly interested in projects where winning would lead to significant progress in the development and implementation of the proposed idea.
  • It is worth noting that the University might not be able to provide financial support to countries under international sanctions. Therefore, they advise projects based in such locations to consider the potential impact before submitting their applications.

Eligible Projects

To qualify for consideration, a project must possess the following attributes:

  • It should be an established initiative with a proven history of success.
  • It should have a connection to either biodiversity or sustainable development, and should be consistent with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
  • It should be capable of being replicated in other regions and ideally have the potential for scaling up.
  • It should have an obvious requirement for financial assistance.
  • It should be capable of inspiring others in the relevant sector.
  • It should contribute towards the global objective of attaining sustainability in both the short- and long-term.
  • It should meet high ethical standards with regard to intellectual property and in its interaction with people and the environment.
  • It should be inclusive.
