SANEF Accuses Big Tech and Parliament of Ignoring Calls to Combat Disinformation

SANEF accused Meta (Facebook), X (Twitter), TikTok, Google, and Parliament of ignoring its requests for dialogue on this critical issue, despite several public announcements by these tech giants outlining strategies to address similar concerns in the European Union and the USA.

Expressing frustration at being “ghosted” by Big Tech and Parliament, SANEF emphasized the lack of enthusiasm for partnerships or dialogue from these entities, which operate in and profit from South Africa.

The organization detailed its efforts, including written requests and follow-ups, to engage with social media companies and Parliament to discuss joint action against disinformation and hate speech during the elections.

SANEF Condemned the Perceived Lack of Accountability

Despite reminders and attempts to initiate dialogue, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Meta had not acknowledged SANEF’s requests by this month.

Google agreed to a meeting but provided only basic responses during the discussion, while Parliament’s Portfolio Committee failed to respond to SANEF’s outreach.

SANEF condemned the perceived lack of accountability and commitment by these entities to address electoral integrity issues, emphasizing the importance of protecting journalists online, curbing hate speech, and promoting authoritative information.

Despite the disappointing response, SANEF reiterated its willingness to engage in dialogue and collaborate on solutions to safeguard the integrity of the upcoming elections.
