The city’s 51-page AI action plan outlines a series of steps the city will take in the coming years to gain a better understanding and responsibly implement the technology that has recently revolutionized the tech sector and broader business world.

Government utilization of automated technologies has frequently stirred controversy, but New York City’s current approach to AI appears to prioritize establishing a foundation for future AI applications and involving external experts and the public.

The city’s AI action plan begins with the creation of an “AI Steering Committee” consisting of city agency stakeholders. The document outlines nearly 40 “actions,” with 29 of them slated for initiation or completion in the coming year. Additionally, the city intends to release an annual AI progress report to keep the public informed about the plan’s implementation.

The chatbot employs Microsoft’s Azure AI services, as mentioned in the tool’s disclaimer.

In a statement introducing the AI action plan, Mayor Adams recognized “the potential challenges and risks posed by these technologies” and committed to maintaining a vigilant perspective on them.

The mayor also conveyed optimism that the action plan would “achieve a crucial equilibrium in the global AI discourse, enabling city agencies to utilize technologies that enhance people’s lives while guarding against those that may cause harm.
