NABJ Ethel Payne Fellowship 2024

This fellowship serves as a tribute to Ethel Payne’s remarkable legacy. Payne was a trailblazing African American female journalist, who became renowned for her focus on international news reporting during her tenure at CBS in 1972. She was an esteemed columnist and lecturer, rising to national prominence during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Sadly, Payne, also known as the “First Lady of the Black Press,” passed away in 1991.

The primary aim of the fellowship is to ensure comprehensive coverage of Africa that transcends the typical narratives of HIV/AIDS, famine, and war. Proposals that delve into the untold and vibrant stories of Africa and its people are strongly encouraged.

Although physical travel to Africa is not mandatory for the fellowship recipient, they will be required to engage and collaborate virtually with African-based entities, programs, and groups within the United States and other parts of the world. This will enable them to authentically capture and convey the diverse stories of Africa, its current climate, and the interactions between journalists in the United States and the continent.
