ICIMOD SANDEE Research Grants 2024

As part of ICIMOD, SANDEE functions as a research capacity-building and academic leadership development network. It offers research support to institutions and researchers from South Asia and the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region with an interest in the correlations between economic development, environmental concerns, and natural resource usage.

Over the next four years (2023-2026), ICIMOD will work towards realizing its new 2030 vision by promoting a greener, more inclusive, and climate-resilient HKH.

The organization’s main focus will be on three strategic groups:

  • Reducing climate and environmental risks.
  • Promoting resilient mountain economies and landscapes.
  • Facilitating sustainable action at regional and global levels.

Benefits

  • The grants typically range from USD 20,000 to USD 30,000 and are typically awarded over a span of two years. The higher end of the grant range is intended for multidisciplinary teams that involve participants from two or more countries within the region, or for projects that address transboundary issues requiring an interdisciplinary approach.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Researchers who are based in South Asia and the HKH region are eligible to submit concept notes.
  • To ensure impartiality, researchers who have relatives working at ICIMOD and current consultants are not eligible to receive the research grant.
  • The principal investigators (PIs) must be professionals in the early to mid-stages of their careers, employed by universities, research institutes, or similar institutions in the region. This includes government agencies and non-profit organizations. Senior researchers, such as professors or directors, are not eligible for the research support/grant.
  • The institutional affiliation of the PI is necessary to receive research support. When submitting a full proposal (not required for concept notes), a letter of support from the institution where the PI is affiliated is required for further consideration.
  • Applications are open and encouraged for women researchers and researchers who are part of member universities in the Himalayan University Consortium (HUC).

Selection Criteria

  • While concept notes addressing environmental/natural resource issues are welcome, priority will be given to those with a strong economic component. That has the potential to result in impactful scientific publications and provide useful information for policymakers at the national, provincial, or local levels in the region.
  • Concept notes proposing action research aimed solely at producing consulting-type reports will not be taken into consideration. SANDEE encourages concept notes that involve interdisciplinary projects, cross-border collaborations, and transboundary topics focusing on mountains and gender. However, it is important to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of each team member.
