Microsoft Releases a Faster and Redesigned Teams App

Microsoft reports that the new Teams version offers up to a twofold increase in speed and consumes 50 percent less memory. This is a significant improvement for current Teams users, especially those with older laptops and PCs that have struggled with resource usage.

Installing the new Microsoft Teams app is expected to be three times faster, while launching or joining meetings will be twice as fast. Additionally, the app now occupies 70 percent less disk space.

Microsoft achieved these performance enhancements by transitioning from the Electron framework to Microsoft’s Edge WebView2 technology. They also adopted the React JavaScript library and concentrated on enhancing the Microsoft Teams design by incorporating the Fluent design language system, resulting in various UI improvements.

Significant Advancements Have Been Made Since the Public Preview Launch

The new Teams was in preview for several months, during which it lacked certain features that Microsoft has since incorporated into the final version. According to Microsoft product lead Anupam Pattnaik, they have made significant advancements since the public preview launch. The new Teams now offers full feature parity for nearly all functions, encompassing custom line-of-business apps, third-party apps, breakout rooms, 7×7 video, call queues, PSTN calling, contextual search in chats and channels, cross-posting channel conversations, and more.

From now on, all new Microsoft Teams features will be available exclusively on this new Teams client. Businesses will need to perform an upgrade, but there’s no need for a complex migration process; it should be as straightforward as a regular update. Microsoft assures that users of the “classic Teams” will be automatically transitioned to the new Teams version in the coming months.
