Application call for MIASA Writing Workshop 2023. This year’s MIASA workshop theme is “Peace, Democracy and Climate Change”.
The Writing workshop is a platform created by the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) to provide Africa-based early career researchers working on the theme of the program with the required space and intellectual community needed for the transformation of a draft paper into a publishable journal piece.
MIASA Writing Workshop 2023 will run for a period of 5 days, providing early career scholars with the opportunity to contribute to knowledge production in one of the three fields of research focus for the 2023 workshop which includes; peace, democracy and climate change.

Benefits and Aims of MIASA Writing Workshop 2023
Aim
- The workshop aims to strengthen the academic writing skills of African early-career scholars, with Priorities Given to female scholars,
- The enhancement of the success rate of early career African scholars’ submissions to high-quality journals,
- To establish a strong network of Africa-based scholars working on the themes of peace, democracy and climate change.
Benefits
- Successfully selected applicants will be provided with funding to cover travel expenses to Ghana from Sub-Saharan Africa
- Participants will also be provided with accommodation and subsistence costs for the duration of the workshop.
- If the pandemic makes the in-person workshop impossible, the writing retreat will be organized virtually instead.

Eligibility Criteria for MIASA Writing Workshop 2023 Qualification
The writing workshop welcomes Applications from early career researchers who meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Candidates with doctorates awarded within 5 years of the application deadline, awarded after January 2018 to date, are eligible to apply
- Applicants who are employed at a recognized university or research institute in Sub-Saharan Africa,
- Applicants must be fluent in written and spoken English to be eligible (Mandatory)
Selection Criteria and Process for MIASA Writing Workshop 2023
All submitted Applications will be assessed and selected through a strictly merit-based procedure. However, the basic selection criteria include the following:
- A PhD certificate was obtained between January 2018 and January 2023,
- Employment at a university or research institute on the African continent,
- Considerations will be given to the Excellence, relevance and originality of the draft research paper,
- How the research fits with the themes of peace, democracy and climate change.
Documents Required for Application
- A letter of motivation (1-page maximum) Stating reasons for wishing to attend the writing workshop and the benefits to be gained,
- A research draft paper of 5,000 to 8,000 words in English which must contain original data and preliminary data analysis in the areas of peace, democracy and climate change, and which is aimed at journal submission,
- Abstract of the paper (max. 500 words),
- A complete Cv
- PhD award certificate.
