Meta’s Avatar Legs Reportedly Roll out to VR Beta Testers

Meta’s avatar legs reportedly roll out to VR beta testers, but, however, only in Quest Home for the time being. Quest Home avatars finally will have a leg to stand on, as the company has now released the appendages for beta testers.

Meta’s Avatar Legs Roll Out

Meta has just walked out legs to player avatars in Quest Home, but however not Horizon Worlds in a new beta announced in the previous week in the Meta Community forums (via UploadVR).

Eliza Kern, Meta communications manager revealed to The Verge in an email that “people will start to see avatar legs appear” in the VR version of Quest Home as well as Horizon Worlds “over the next few weeks,” thus confirming in a separate email that the update in question will be coming to all players, and not just public beta testers.

Community manager Ryanality on the other hand posted in the forums that the “Public Test Channel (PTC) for Quest v57 is starting to roll out for Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 soon,” although without specifying any form of new features. And then, just yesterday, a forum user known as TomCgcmfc reported their avatar had legs.

How Will the Avatar Legs Look Like

A post on X (a social media platform formerly known as Twitter) from Brad Lynch revealed what the legs will look like. Beta users, for the time being, cannot see their legs without getting to look at an in-game mirror, and from the posted video, it looks very much like the avatar will not crouch when the user does so. Although the legs in question have not made an appearance in Horizon Worlds just yet, they, however, do exist in betas for a new mobile as well as web version of Horizon Worlds, which was rumored in the previous month.

Meta Community users in the forum also reported updated menus that enabled hand tracking to position and use them (rather than just needing direct manipulation). One user on Reddit claimed to see improvements to both hand tracking as well as auto-switching between controllers and even hands. NyaVR on X also posted that they found code references to new settings, and this includes an extended battery mode (via Mixed Reality News).

Meta’s Announcement of Avatar Legs

It has been over 10 months now since Meta announced legs would be coming, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stating at Meta Connect that legs are “probably the most requested feature.” Zuckerberg stated at the time that the company would need to make use of an AI model for leg movement simply because tracking them with the headset’s cameras is kind of tricky. Tricky enough, apparently, that the legs that were shown in the Connect keynote in the previous year may have actually been prerecorded motion capture.

Meta Connect 2023

It is however very much possible that Meta will drop more leg news at Meta Connect on September 27th of this year. A lot of the show probably will be devoted to more details regarding the new Quest 3 headset, although there just might not be much left to the imagination at this point in time, thus considering that somebody may have already filmed its unboxing.
