The Lex-led Annual Essay Competition 2023, is inviting suitably qualified African law Students, who are passionate about driving positive change in their communities, for an opportunity to benefit from the $500 prize. This year, Lex:lead seeks insightful essays that address a critical question: “How effective have laws protecting the rights of children been in reducing poverty and supporting economic development? How could they be improved?” Your perspectives to this topic could contribute to meaningful change.

What is Lex:Lead?

Lex:Lead’s journey began in 2010 with a mission to continue the work of the Global Challenge, a group formed in 2001 under the International Bar Association. They focus on development in the least developed countries. Anne, a passionate advocate, became the director in 2005, and in 2010, Lex:lead was established as a New York Not-for-Profit registered charity with US Section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

Benefits of Lex-led Annual Essay Competition

  • Lex:lead offers up to 16 awards, each valued at $500. Please note that these awards are generally payable to the winner’s educational institution on their behalf. This is to ensure that the funds directly support their academic journey.
  • Lex:lead is committed to empowering students without charging any participation fees.
  • In addition to these benefits, all registered candidates who submit an essay by October 31, 2023, will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Lex-lead Annual Essay Competition – Requirements for Qualification

To participate in this Essay Competition;

  • You must be a student with citizenship in one of the eligible countries and
  • Be enrolled in at least one law class.
  • All Finalists will need to demonstrate their citizenship and current enrollment at an accredited institution in an eligible country with at least one law class.

Eligible Countries Include:

Americas: Haiti

Asia/Middle East: Afghanistan, Lao, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu, Yemen, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, and Kiribati

Africa: Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Comoros, DR Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan (Rep.), Central African Rep., Chad, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia,.
