Sergei Kravinoff, also known as Kraven the Hunter, is a renowned antagonist from the Spider-Man comics, crafted by the legendary duo Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. As a character, Kraven is a Russian noble forced to flee to America with his family due to the turmoil of the February Revolution in 1917.

In America, Kraven’s obsession with proving himself as the ultimate predator leads him to become a formidable big game hunter. Eventually, finding no thrill in ordinary hunting, he turns his sights on Spider-Man, aiming to defeat him as a means to cement his reputation as the greatest hunter in the world.

The character was subtly hinted at in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014), sparking interest in bringing him more prominently onto the big screen. Marc Webb, the director of the film, had expressed a desire to explore Kraven in future movies. This interest culminated in Sony’s decision to develop a standalone Kraven movie, highlighting the studio’s plans to expand its cinematic universe centered around Spider-Man’s rich rogues’ gallery.

In 2017, Sony began to consider seriously the idea of a film focused on Kraven. By August 2018, Richard Wenk was onboard to draft the screenplay, and by March 2019, Sony confirmed that “Kraven the Hunter” was officially in development. Interestingly, Ryan Coogler, the director of the MCU’s “Black Panther,” had initially hoped to include Kraven in his film, a plan that was altered upon the realization that Sony held the cinematic rights to the character.

This upcoming film is set to provide Kraven with a significant spotlight within Sony’s expanding superhero universe, offering a deep dive into one of Spider-Man’s most iconic adversaries.

When Does the Film Come Out?

“Kraven the Hunter” experienced several shifts in its release schedule, initially set for January 13, 2023, and then moved to October 6, 2023. The adjustments in the release date were influenced by external factors, notably the SAG-AFTRA strikes, which led to a significant delay. Consequently, the release of “Kraven the Hunter” has been postponed by 10 months, now slated for a premiere on August 30, 2024.

This adjustment underscores the impact of industry-wide events on film production and release timelines, setting the stage for Kraven’s cinematic debut in Sony’s superhero universe.

Will Kraven the Hunter Be In Theaters or Streaming?

“Kraven the Hunter” is scheduled for an exclusive theatrical release on August 30, 2024. Following its run in cinemas, the film will make its way to Netflix, becoming available for streaming after its theatrical window closes and subsequent to its release on video-on-demand and home video platforms.

This progression is part of a strategic agreement reached in April 2021 between Netflix and Sony, granting Netflix the exclusive rights to host Sony’s new movies in the so-called pay-one window. This deal underscores the evolving landscape of film distribution, ensuring that audiences have the opportunity to enjoy Sony’s latest offerings, including “Kraven the Hunter,” both on the big screen and through streaming services.

Cast and Characters

For the pivotal role of Kraven in “Kraven the Hunter,” Sony considered several high-profile actors, including Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeves, John David Washington, and Adam Driver, showcasing the studio’s ambition to cast a significant figure in the lead role. Ultimately, Aaron Taylor-Johnson was chosen for the part, with his casting decision being significantly influenced by his appearance in the first trailer for “Bullet Train.”

His agreement includes portraying Kraven in future movies beyond “Kraven the Hunter.” Taylor-Johnson is well-known for his roles as the eponymous character in “Kick-Ass” and its sequel, as well as Pietro Maximoff in the MCU’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” demonstrating his versatility and appeal as an action star.

The role of Calypso, Kraven’s love interest and a voodoo priestess known for her magical prowess in the comics, was a subject of speculation, with Jodie Turner-Smith initially rumored for the part. However, in March 2022, it was announced that Ariana DeBose, an Academy Award-winning actress, would be portraying Calypso.

This casting choice indicates the filmmakers’ intention to delve into the complex romantic dynamics between Kraven and Calypso, potentially adding depth to the narrative. DeBose has been celebrated for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of “West Side Story,” along with performances in “The Prom” and “Schmigadoon!,” highlighting her diverse acting talents and strong presence on screen.

Makers of Kraven the Hunter

The screenplay for “Kraven the Hunter” was penned by Richard Wenk, known for his work on the “Equalizer” series and “The Magnificent Seven,” alongside screenwriting duo Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who have contributed to films like “Iron Man” and “Uncharted.” A year after Wenk joined, J.C. Chandor was brought on to direct, recognized for “Triple Frontier” and “A Most Violent Year.” The film’s production team includes producers Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, and Avi Arad, with Ben Davis, who has a history with superhero movies like “Guardians of the Galaxy,” serving as the cinematographer.

Plot Of Kraven the Hunter

“Kraven the Hunter” will chart the journey of Sergei Kravinoff as he endeavors to prove himself as the world’s foremost hunter, delving into his life story and the trials he faces in his pursuit of this title.

The official plot synopsis of the film via Sony Pictures reads;

“Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film.”

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has hinted at a fresh interpretation of Kraven, describing his version of the character as “an animal lover” and “a protector of the natural world,” signaling a nuanced portrayal that diverges from traditional depictions. Additionally, in an interview with Esquire, director J.C. Chandor suggested that “Kraven the Hunter” will adopt a significantly darker tone, promising a deeper and more intense exploration of the character’s narrative.

“Sony probably doesn’t want me to lead with this, but the story is a tragedy. When the final credits roll on this film, if you’ve been paying attention, you won’t have the feeling that this is all going to end great.”

When and Where Was Kraven the Hunter Filmed?

In February 2022, “Kraven the Hunter” began its filming in Iceland at Lake Mývatn under the working title “Safari.” The shoot involved 80 personnel from TrueNorth Productions for a two-day filming period. Following this, the movie, operating under the working title “Spiral,” initiated its principal photography on March 20, 2022, in London, England, concluding by mid-June of the same year.

Kraven the Hunter Rated

At the CinemaCon presentation in 2023, Aaron Taylor-Johnson announced that “Kraven the Hunter” will carry an R-rating, marking it as the first film within Sony’s Spider-Man universe to receive this classification. Despite fans’ expectations for the “Venom” films to receive an R-rating, they, along with “Morbius,” were designated PG-13.

Traditionally, most superhero movies are rated PG-13, but the success of the “Deadpool” series has encouraged film studios to pursue R-ratings more aggressively for their superhero projects. This trend is evident in movies like “Logan,” “Joker,” “Birds of Prey,” “The Suicide Squad,” and “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” all of which have received R-ratings, showcasing a shift towards more mature content within the superhero genre.
