How to Swipe a Credit Card

Swiping a credit card is very easy. Generally, all you need to do is to position the magnetic strip that is located on the back of the reader slot of the card, you should then face the magnetic strip towards the card reader, and in the event that the card reader is lying flat, you should keep the magnetic strip on the bottom so that the front of the card gets to face up. And lastly, from top to bottom, you should move the magnetic strip through the card reader slot.

For a clearer and more detailed instructions on how to successfully complete a transaction via card swiping, read through the steps below;

Locate the Credit Card Terminal

Look for a device with a slot or swipe area specifically designed for credit cards. It is usually found near the cash register or payment counter in stores or businesses.

Prepare the Credit Card

Take your credit card and hold it with the front side facing you. Ensure that the magnetic stripe on the back of the card is clean and undamaged. If it is dirty or scratched, gently wipe it with a soft cloth.

Position the Credit Card

Orient the credit card so that the side with the magnetic stripe is facing down. The magnetic stripe contains the necessary information that needs to be read by the terminal.

Swipe the Card

Insert the edge of the credit card with the magnetic stripe into the designated slot or swipe area on the credit card terminal. Make sure to insert it in the direction indicated by the arrows or guides on the terminal. Swipe the card smoothly and steadily in one swift motion from one side to the other. Do not swipe too quickly or too slowly to ensure an accurate reading.

Wait For Authorization

After swiping the card, keep it in the terminal until the transaction is authorized. The terminal will communicate with the credit card company’s network to verify the card details and determine if the transaction can be approved.

Follow Additional Instructions

Depending on the terminal and the transaction type, you may be required to enter a PIN or provide a signature for verification. Follow the prompts on the terminal’s screen and provide the necessary information.

Complete the Transaction

Once the transaction is authorized, the terminal will display the approved amount, and you will be prompted to finalize the payment. If necessary, provide the payment method you wish to use (e.g., cash, another card). If the transaction is complete, the terminal will provide a receipt.

Retrieve Your Credit Card

After completing the transaction, remove your credit card from the terminal’s slot. Ensure that you have your card back before leaving the counter or store.

Remember, with the increasing prevalence of chip-based cards and contactless payment methods, such as tapping or mobile payments, swiping credit cards is becoming less common. Nevertheless, many places still offer the option to swipe for older or magnetic stripe-only cards.

Wrong Ways to Swipe Your Card

Just as mentioned already, there are wrong ways of swiping your credit card. And if you get to swipe incorrectly, the card reader may make a beeping noise showing that the card could not be properly read, and to try again. That being said, here are a couple of things to keep in mind in that regard;

  • You should not face the magnetic strip away from the card reader when you are swiping.
  • Do not face the magnetic strip up in the card reader.

That’s it!
