Tech company Google has reportedly laid off more than a thousand employees across several departments of the company since January 10th. The message of CEO Sundar Pichai is to brace up for more cuts.

“We have ambitious goals and will be investing in our big priorities this year,” Pichai revealed to all Google employees in an internal memo on Wednesday that was shared. “The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices.”

Departments of Google Affected By the Reported Layoffs

Those tough choices so far have been inclusive of layoffs and reorganizations in the hardware, search, ad sales, shopping, hardware, policy, maps, core engineering as well as YouTube teams at Google.

“These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team,” Pichai in his memo wrote, which is a reference to when Google cut 12,000 jobs this time in the previous year. “But I know it’s very difficult to see colleagues and teams impacted.”

What The Layoffs Are About According To Google’s CEO

Pichai stated that the said layoffs this year were about “removing layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in some areas.” He also confirmed what many inside Google have been fearing: that more “role eliminations” are still to come.

“Many of these changes are already announced, though to be upfront, some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed, and some roles may be impacted,” he added.

A spokesperson for Google didn’t have additional comment on the matter.
