The fourth annual Hackathon has arrived, and this time we’re focusing on the challenges of greywater recycling for sustainable agriculture and kitchen gardening.
FINISH Mondial Annual San Tech Hackathon 2023 – 2024
The goal of the “Greywater Recycling for Sustainable Agriculture and Kitchen Gardening” hackathon is to encourage technological advancements and solutions for treating and recycling household greywater, supporting sustainable agriculture and kitchen gardening. By properly filtering and reusing greywater obtained from sinks, showers, laundry, and baths, it can become a valuable resource for irrigation, reducing water waste and lessening the need for freshwater in agriculture.
Key Areas of Focus
Participants in this hackathon have the opportunity to select one of the following main areas to focus on:
- Greywater Treatment Technologies: Innovators can work on creating affordable and efficient greywater treatment systems that effectively clean and disinfect greywater for agricultural purposes. They may explore innovative approaches such as filtration, biological treatment, and disinfection techniques. Also, they should consider sustainability, energy efficiency, and ease of maintenance when designing treatment systems.
- Smart Irrigation Systems: In this area, innovators can develop advanced irrigation systems that can be optimized and controlled to distribute treated greywater to kitchen gardens and small farms. They may incorporate automation and data-driven solutions to optimize water distribution, promote plant growth, and minimize water consumption. The design of user-friendly interfaces for controlling irrigation systems is also important.
- Sensor and Monitoring Solutions: Participants are invited to design and create sensors and monitoring tools that enable users to track the quality of treated greywater and ensure it meets the required standards for safe agricultural use. The focus here should be on developing real-time monitoring and reporting solutions to monitor water quality continuously.
- Community Engagement and Education: This focus area calls for the development of outreach programs. Educational materials, and awareness campaigns to encourage the adoption of greywater recycling for agriculture within communities. The emphasis is on promoting the benefits of sustainable water usage, environmental conservation, and resource efficiency. The innovation should involve community participation and cooperation in implementing greywater recycling practices.
Prizes
The organizers will grant a €5,000 (Five Thousand Euros) reward to the Hackathon champion. Furthermore, they will implement the winning project in one of the FINISH Mondial countries, namely Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Tanzania, or Uganda.
The first-place runner-ups will receive €3,000 (Three Thousand Euros), while the organizers will award €1,000 (One Thousand Euros) to the second-place runner-ups. Additionally, there will be a popular vote award during the winners’ announcement, giving a prize of €1,000 (One Thousand Euros
